This primary source recounts Brian Faulkner’s beliefs about processions in Northern Ireland. Faulkner, the Northern Ireland Prime Minister during Bloody Sunday, argued that the ban of processions in Northern Ireland should continue after the six month ban ends on February 8, 1972. Faulkner believed this ban protected the security forces, and it allowed them to focus on internment. This speech explained part of the catalyst that led to Bloody Sunday, the ban of marches in Northern Ireland and internment.
